Mumbai, (PTI) Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday appealed rebel MLAs of his party camping in Guwahati to return to Mumbai and talk to him.

It is not too late. I appeal to you to return and sit with me and remove the confusion (created by your actions) among Shiv Sainiks and the public, a statement by Thackeray's aide quoted him as saying.

If you return and face me, some way could be found. As party president and family head, I still care for you, he said.

Thackeray's statement comes in the backdrop of rebel goup leader Eknath Shinde daring the party to disclose the names of some of the MLAs camping in Guwahati who were reportedly in touch with the party leadership.

BJP takes stock of situation as rebel Shiv Sena MLAs consolidate position to topple MVA govt

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The BJP is weighing options as Shiv Sena rebels consolidate their position in a bid to topple the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, with former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis expected to meet the BJP top brass here to finalise the next course of action.

Sources said the BJP is expecting Sena rebels, who include 39 MLAs and have been joined by at least 10 independents in a Guwahati hotel, to make the first move by approaching Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Independent MLA Ravi Rana claimed the independents are supporting the BJP and that the next chief minister would be from the BJP-led alliance

Though the BJP sources expressed confidence that the Uddhav Thackeray government is on its last legs, the party is treading cautiously to avoid any wrong move like the one in 2019 which had caused it embarrassment when Fadnavis formed a short lived government in alliance with the NCP faction headed by Ajit Pawar without ensuring adequate support of MLAs.

Fadnavis had to resign in two days as NCP supremo Sharad Pawar rallied his party MLAs to deny him the numbers.

The political crisis in Maharashtra started when Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde, who has claimed the support of more than three dozen party MLAs, raised a banner of revolt against the Shiv Sena leadership.

The revolt in the Shiv Sena, which heads the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, has pushed the three-party ruling coalition, which also consists of the NCP and the Congress, into a deep crisis.

In a relief to rebel Shiv Sena lawmakers, the Supreme Court on Monday kept in abeyance the disqualification proceedings before the Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly till July 11 and sought responses to pleas by rebel MLAs questioning the legality of notices seeking their disqualification.

The top court, however, refused to pass any interim order on the plea of the Maharashtra government that there should not be any floor test in the Assembly and said they can always approach it in case of an illegality.

The Gujarat Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested Teesta Setalvad

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested Teesta Setalvad in connection with a case on her NGO which allegedly gave baseless information about the 2002 Gujarat riots to the police.

The Gujarat Police will produce her in the court at 3 pm today and will seek 14-days of custody as she is not cooperating in the investigation.

The action came after Union Minister Amit Shah in an interview with ANI said that Teesta Setalvad-run NGO gave baseless information about the 2002 Gujarat riots to the police. “Former IPS officer RB Sreekumar was arrested yesterday and Teesta Setalvad was arrested today. Forging of evidence and hindering with evidence will be looked into. We will produce both the accused in the court by 3 pm,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Chaitanya Mandlik. “The accused are not supporting us in the investigation. We are demanding 14 days of custody. Teesta will be produced in front of the Magistrate and all her statements will be recorded there. We are getting the documents arranged from various sources,” said the DCP. He further said that as of now the investigation is at a primary level and later strict actions will be taken once the investigation is done.

“We have done the medical check-up, and the due process was followed by the Crime Branch. The investigation is at a primary level, strict actions will be taken once the investigation is done. We have the primary affidavits and documents submitted by the accused,” he added. Earlier in the day, Setalvad was taken for a medical checkup at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.

“They have done my medical. I have a big bruise on my hand, this is what the ATS did to me. They are taking me to the magistrate’s court,” said Teesta Setalvad had said after the medical checkup. On Saturday, Gujarat Anti-terrorism Squad (ATS) team detained Setalvad from Mumbai in connection with a case on her NGO and later in the night she was taken to Ahmedabad. The Gujarat ATS team took Teesta Setalvad to the Santacruz police station yesterday.

“I have read the judgement very carefully. The judgement clearly mentions the name of Teesta Setalvad. The NGO that was run being run by her – I don’t remember the name of the NGO- had given baseless information about the riots to the police,” Amit Shah, in an exclusive interview, told ANI.

The Supreme Court had on Friday, dismissed as “devoid of merit” an appeal by Zakia Jafri in a plea challenging SIT’s clean chit to the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi and others in cases related to the riots. Zakia Jafri is the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the riots.

Asked about his mention of NGOs, Shah said: “I have read the judgment hurriedly but it clearly states the name of Teesta Setalvad. It was Setalvad’s NGO that gave an application involving BJP workers in every police station and the pressure by the media was so immense that every application was treated as truth.”

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar, upholding the Special Investigation Team or SIT’s 2012 clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the then chief minister of Gujarat, in the Gujarat riots case, said that Setalvad, co-petitioner in the case, exploited the emotions of Zakia Jafri. “All those involved in such abuse of process need to be in the dock and proceeded with in accordance with the law,” the judges said, adding that the appeal was filed under “dictation of someone.”

“Antecedents of Teesta Setalvad need to be reckoned with and also because she has been vindictively persecuting this lis [dispute] for her ulterior design by exploiting the emotions and sentiments of Zakia Jafri, the real victim of the circumstances,” the top court said in its order.

The case pertains to what came to be known as the Gulbarg Society incident, in which 68 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were killed in the riots triggered by the burning of a train coach in which 59 people perished in February 2002. A decade later, the SIT report, exonerated Narendra Modi, citing “no prosecutable evidence” in the Gulbarg Society case.

On Friday, upholding the SIT clearance, the top court dismissed the petition filed by Zakia Jafri, saying that the plea was “to keep the pot boiling, obviously, for ulterior design.”

The SIT had opposed the plea of Jafri saying there is a sinister plot behind the complaint to probe the “larger conspiracy” behind the 2002 Gujarat riots and the original complaint by Jafri was directed by social activist Setalvad, who had also challenged an October 2017 order of the Gujarat High Court refusing to reopen the closure report of the SIT.

“The protagonists of the quest for justice sitting in a comfortable environment in their air-conditioned office may succeed in connecting failures of the state administration at different levels during such a horrendous situation, little knowing or even referring to the ground realities and the continual effort put in by the duty holders in controlling the spontaneous evolving situation unfolding aftermath mass violence across the state,” the Supreme Court said.

New Delhi:(PTI) In a relief to rebel Shiv Sena lawmakers, the Supreme Court Monday kept in abeyance the disqualification proceedings before the Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly till July 11 and sought responses to pleas by rebel MLAs questioning the legality of notices seeking their disqualification.

A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala directed the Maharashtra government to protect the life, liberty, and property of 39 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs and their family members.

While issuing notice to the Maharashtra deputy speaker, the top court directed him to put on affidavit records of no trust notice served upon him by rebel MLAs.

The top court also recorded the statement of Maharashtra's counsel that adequate steps have been taken to protect the life and property of rebel MLAs.

Twitter ‘withholds’ journalist Rana Ayyub’s account in India

New Delhi: Journalist Rana Ayyub has posted a notice from Twitter which informed her that the microblogging site has withheld her account in India under Information Technology Act, 2000.

Ayyub on Sunday took to her Twitter account to post the notice and said: “Hello @Twitter, what exactly is this?”

The notice from Twitter that Ayyub shared read: “In order to comply with Twitter’s obligations under India’s local laws, we have withheld the following account in India under the country’s Information Technology Act, 2000: the content remains available elsewhere.”

“As Twitter strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of the people who use our service, it is our policy to notify account holders if we receive a legal request from an authorized entity (such law enforcement or government agency) to remove content from their account. We provide notice whether or not the user lives in the country where the request originated,” it read.

In response to Ayyb’s tweet, tennis legend Martina Navaratolina said: “So who is next?!? Just awful…” She tagged Rana Ayyub and Twitter on her post.

Former CEO of Prasar Bharati, Shashi Shekhar Vempati said that the notice by Twitter could be “either a bug or a delayed reaction to past incidents.”

Vempati tweeted: “Noticed many hyperventilating tweets regarding so called online censorship by Govt of India via @TwitterIndia . It either seems to be a bug or a delayed reaction to past incidents for I too have received such an email from @Twitter overnight for the incident last year.”

The former Prasar Bharti CEO also shared an email with a similar message that he had received.

Alluding to the Twitter posting by Rana Ayyub, Vempati tweeted: “Including an account withheld in India message from @Twitter @TwitterIndia. Perhaps the “celebrity Islamophobia Activist” can pipe down and stop claiming victimhood.”

Vempati was among those whose accounts were withheld last year based on the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to prevent any escalation of law and order situation during the farmers’ agitation.

According to Twitter an account withheld message means that the microblogging site “was compelled to withhold the entire account specified (e.g., @username) in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order.”

Twitter’s policy states that it may be necessary to withhold accounts in case of a “valid and properly scoped request from an authorised entity. “Such withholdings will be limited to the specific jurisdiction that has issued the valid legal demand or where the content has been found to violate local law(s),” according to its policy.

Meanwhile, In February, the Enforcement Directorate attached Rs 1.77 crore of Washington Post columnist Rana Ayyub in a money laundering case.

According to an official, Ayyub allegedly utilized the parts of donations meant for three campaigns, for personal expenses. “She allegedly didn’t utilize donations meant for three campaigns for the right purpose. Parts of donations were allegedly used for personal expenses,” said the ED official.

The Congress leaders will address press conferences at 20 different places across the country a day before the nationwide protest against the Central government’s Agnipath scheme.

The party has demanded a rollback of the scheme. Tripura bypolls: BJP leads in 3 seats, Congress in 1

Agartala, Jun 26 (PTI) BJP candidates, including Chief Minister Manik Saha, were ahead in three seats, while the Congress was leading in one assembly constituency as votes were counted for the high-stakes by-elections in Tripura on Sunday morning, officials said.

CM Saha was leading in the Town Bardowali seat by 4,363 votes after six rounds of counting. He has got 12,556, while his nearest rival Asish Kumar Saha of the Congress secured 8,193 votes, as per data provided by the Election Commission.

In the Agartala seats, Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barma was leading by 3,202 votes after eight rounds of counting. He secured 17,241 votes, while Ashok Sinha of the BJP got 14,039 votes.

The CPI(M) was trailing in its traditional bastion of Jubarajnagar to the BJP. After eight rounds of counting, BJP candidate Malina Debnath was leading by 4,320. She secured 18,381 votes, while her nearest candidate Shailendra Chandra Nath of the CPI(M) got 14,061 votes.

The BJP was leading in Surma as well with its candidate Swapna Das ahead by 1,806 votes after two rounds of counting. She got 4,457 votes, while CPI(M)'s Anjan Das secured 2,651 votes.

The TMC, which was looking to make inroads in the Northeastern state, was performing dismally with its candidates at the distant fourth spot in all the seats.

The counting for the by-elections, which were held on June 23, began at 8 am.

Mehbooba urges Kashmiri youth to shun militancy

Srinagar, Jun 25 (PTI) PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday appealed to the youth of Kashmir to shun militancy and save their lives, claiming security forces were getting incentives for killing them.

Mehbooba said Jammu and Kashmir was going through a tumultuous phase and in the times to come, it will need its youth.

"I hear every day that three or four youths have been killed, which means the local recruitment here has increased," she told reporters here.

"It is my request to the parents and the children to save their lives because killing you is an incentive for them (security forces). They get money and promotions for that, she alleged.

So, do not pick up arms. They kill four-five (militants) every day... I appeal to you this is not right and you should leave it, the PDP president said.

Referring to the protests by Kashmiri Pandits over the target killings of the members of the community, she said people, including religious leaders, should emphasise on the fact that Pandits were a part of the Kashmiri society and are its asset.

Kashmiri Pandits are still protesting. When the situation was bad during my tenure (as CM), even then no Pandit was killed. We provided them a salary for 17 months while they were home. I appeal to our people, our maulvis (religious leaders) to announce that they (Kashmiri Pandits) are our assets," she said.

"Whenever something wrong happens here, the BJP uses this community (Kashmiri Pandits) to defame us, she added.

About the unprecedented security arrangements for this year's Amarnath Yatra, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said the administration has created such an atmosphere as if some attacker is coming.

They are yatris, our guests. We have been caring for them for centuries. But, (this year), you (administration) have placed so many nakas (security checkpoints) that it seems the yatra is taking place for the first time, she added.

Referring to the revocation of Article 370 by the Centre in August 2019, Mehbooba said the endeavour is to take away our lands, jobs, mineral, water, assets, but do not let them take your courage .

They want to give us a sense of hopelessness and helplessness that nothing will happen now and what has happened, has happened. But, it is not like that. I do not accept that whatever has happened, has happened. We all have to get united.

If we lose hope and accept everything, then, God forbid, our position will become worse that the people in the Gaza strip who have certain rights... So, do not lose hope. We still have many things which we need to safeguard. Otherwise, a time will come when our situation will be worse than what Israel did to Gaza Strip, she said.

The PDP chief said if the people stand united and use their powers in a peaceful manner, democratically, constitutionally and politically, then we will succeed and get back what was taken from us .

On the ban on Falah Aam Trust (FAT) schools, followed by administration's direction that schools built on government land should be shut, she said, after 2019, attempts are being made to disempower the people of Kashmir.

Now, there is a latest attack on education. First, they targeted the 300 schools of FAT. They are accused of being affiliated to the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). Is JeI a criminal organisation? Does it provide arms training or trishul' (trident) or sword training to children which otherwise takes place at (RSS) shakas?

They provide modern education, have the same syllabus which other schools have. The only difference is that our poor children study there in minimal fees. Now, they are closing schools which are on government land, she said.

This, she added, will leave lakhs of students and thousands of teachers helpless.

On the situation in Maharashtra, she said the BJP has made a mess of this country .

The country was built with so much of blood and sweat by leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru, over the years by the Congress party, Indira Gandhi, A B Vajpayee. The basic fundamentals of India were democracy and secularism. They are turning everything upside down.

They are the most corrupt system that I have ever seen in my life because (of) the way they are purchasing MLAs after the elections, be it in Rajasthan, MP, Goa or now in Maharashtra. There is no example of such corruption in the history of India for the last 70 years, she said.

On the Centre's Agnipath scheme, Mehbooba said it was against the pride, the hard work and the spirit of sacrifice of the army personnel.

Famous for its unique tribal culture, scenic beauty and naturally created sites, Jashpur is establishing its new identity in tea cultivation from the last 3.5 years. Till now, Assam and Darjeeling were famous for tea cultivation in India, but tea cultivation in Jashpur has also started catching attraction of tourists. Situated in the northern-east corner of Chhattisgarh, Jashpur district has a favourable climate and geographical conditions for tea production. Keeping this in view, a tea garden has been established here to promote tea cultivation. One of the usp here is that pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used for tea cultivation in other parts of country but due to the Godhan Nyay Yojana, vermicompost is used in the tea gardens of Jashpur which enhances the taste of tea along with providing many health benefits.

Establishment of the Tea Processing Unit

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, the Chhattisgarh government has set up a tea processing unit at Balachhapar in Jashpur district at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. Production of black and green tea has started here. The unit has been set up in the Environment Plantation Complex of the Forest Department at Balachhapar. The unit has a processing capacity of 300 kg green tea leaves per day.

Tea garden becoming a popular tourist attraction

Sarudih tea garden, situated three kilometres away from Jashpur district headquarters in the lap of mountains and forests, is becoming a popular tourist attraction. Sprawled over an area of about 18 acres, the tea garden is being operated by a women group under the guidance of the Forest Department. A large number of people visit here everyday. Similarly, tea plantation is also being done at Sodga Ashram in Jashpur.

India adds 12,249 coronavirus infections, 13 deaths; active cases up by over 2300

New Delhi: (PTI) India reported 12,249 new coronavirus infections and 13 deaths, while active cases went up by over 2,300 in a 24-hour span, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

The latest updates pushed the country's overall Covid numbers to 4,33,31,645 cases, 5,24,903 deaths and 81,687 active cases, the data released at 8 am showed.

The number of active cases rose by 2,374 from Tuesday to stand at 81,687, and now constitute 0.19 per cent of the total infections, the ministry said.

The country's COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.60 per cent as the number of people who have recuperated from the disease increased to 4,27,25,055. The case fatality rate was recorded at 1.21 per cent.

According to the ministry, 196.45 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020. It surpassed the grim milestone of four crore cases on January 25 this year.

The 13 new fatalities include eight from Kerala and one each from Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Z category security cover for Yashwant Sinha

New Delhi, Jun 24 (PTI) The Centre has extended a Z category cover of armed CRPF commandos to the opposition's presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha, officials said on Friday.

The squad has taken over the task after the Union home ministry directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) VIP security wing to ensure protection to the 84-year-old Sinha.

The armed personnel, about eight to ten working in shifts, will escort Sinha whenever he moves across the country, they said.

A higher Z-plus cover of CRPF commandos has also been accorded to the NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.

Sinha is expected to file his nomination on June 27 following which he will travel across the country seeking votes in his favour.

The presidential election would be held on July 18 to elect a successor to incumbent Ram Nath Kovind and the result would be out on July 21.

Kovind's term will end on July 24.

After reaching his family home ‘Matoshree’ in Mumbai on Wednesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray greeted hundreds of Shiv Sena supporters gathered outside his residence.

The chief minister left his official residence ‘Varsha’ along with his family members earlier today after he expressed his readiness to step down if rebel MLAs returned to Mumbai and made such a demand. Uddhav Thackeray left his official residence along with members of his family amid slogans of “Uddhav tum aage badho, hum tumhare saath hain” from his supporters.

Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray along with his mother Rashmi Thackeray and brother Tejas Thackeray followed Uddhav Thackeray in a car as left the official residence. Luggage was also seen being moved out of the chief minister’s official residence.

The political crisis facing the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra deepened on Wednesday after rebel party MLAs claimed the support of 46 MLAs. Congress and NCP are partners of Shiv Sena in the alliance government.

Shiv Sena workers also gathered outside Matoshree, the residence of the Thackeray family, to express their support.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, Thackeray addressed the people of the state via Facebook and said he was willing to give his resignation to party MLAs who can take it to Raj Bhavan.

Noting that a section of party MLAs was gunning for his ouster, he said instead of going to Surat, they could have conveyed their feelings to him. Thackeray said it is a matter of shame for him if “even a single MLA” was against him.

“If any MLA wants me to not continue as the CM, I am ready to take all my belongings from Varsha Bungalow (official residence of the CM) to Matoshri,” Thackeray said.

“I am ready to give my resignation to the MLAs, they should come here and take my resignation to Raj Bhavan. I am ready to leave the post of Shiv Sena party head also, not on the saying of others but my workers,” he added.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut expressed confidence in Shiv Sena sailing through the crisis.

“Uddhav Thackeray is Maharashtra Chief Minister and he will remain the CM. If we get the chance, we will prove our majority on the floor of the House,” he said.

Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde, who is leading the revolt, said that it was essential for the party for its survival to get out of the “unnatural alliance” and asserted that only the constituent parties benefitted during the tenure of the coalition government in the state.

“In the last two and a half years, the government benefited only the constituent parties. It’s essential to get out of the unnatural alliance for the survival of the party. Decisions need to be taken now in the interest of Maharashtra,” Shinde said in tweets.

Man killed by Naxals in Maharashtr

Nagpur, Jun 23 (PTI) Naxals have allegedly killed a 37-year-old man in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, police said on Thursday.

The rebels allegedly picked up the victim, Lucky Kumar Oksa, from his house in Malampodur village on Wednesday night and killed him using sharp weapons, a senior police official said.

The victim's body was found in the village on Thursday morning, he said.

The reason behind the killing was yet to be ascertained.

The police were conducting an investigation into the incident, the official added.

Narwa Mission will harmonize the work implemented for Narwa repairs by different departments

The seven-member Narwa Mission has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary Mr. Subrat Sahoo

To enable the smooth operation of Narwa programmes in Chhattisgarh under the instructions of the Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel, to expedite the works related to the Narwa development, and to establish harmony between the works carried out for Narwa development by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and the Climate Change Department, a seven-member Narwa Mission was constituted under the Chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest and Climate Change Department, Mr. Subrat Sahoo.

The Secretary of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department Mr. R. Prasanna, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Forces Mr. Rakesh Chaturvedi, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Executive Officer Campa Mr. V. Shrinivas Rao, Additional Pricipal Chief Conservator of Forests (Joint Forest Management) Mr. Arun Kumar Pandey, Commissioner of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Mission Mr. Mohammad Abdul Kaiser Haq, Nodal Officer of Narwa-Garwa-Gurwa-Badi and Chhattisgarh Godhan Nyay Scheme Dr. Tamboli Aiyaaz Fakir Bhai, and the Chief Engineer of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Mission Mr. Narayan Nimje will be the members of the Narwa Mission.

The Narwa Programmes in the state are being conducted by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and the Forest and Climate Change Department. The Narwa programme aims at recharging underground water by the supply of water from drainage channels so that they have an everlasting water supply through structures like small underground dykes.

This program will increase the irrigated areas in Chhattisgarh and water will be available for agriculture in most places. Water supply problems for release will also be remedied. Additionally, it will also promote biodiversity.

The Additional Chief Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development Department will monitor the Narwa Programme conducted by the Department through their Head Office, and the works related to the Narwa development done by the Forest and Climate Change Department will be reviewed and operated by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the Head of Forest Forces.

Under the Narwa Development Programme, 30 thousand drainage channels in the state have been selected for recharging. Under the first phase, the repair of 9541 Narwas have been permitted. Under the Narwa Development Programme, structures like Loose Boulder Check, Check dam, Gully Plug, Contour Trench, and Stop Dam are being constructed to keep away the rain water from flooding the drainage channels during the repairs. Now the repaired channels have water even during the summers. This has raised the availability of water for release, irrigation, and drinking water while also increasing the ground water level.
