IOC releases first visual identity to bolster Olympic brand’s core values

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released its first-ever visual identity in order to bring the Olympic brand and its core values to life, the IOC announced on Wednesday.

This new visual system has been created to bolster the Olympic brand’s core values, while enhancing consistency, recognition and impact across all IOC platforms, communications and publications, the IOC said via a media release.

“The IOC recognised the need to create a comprehensive foundational identity, designed for use across all mediums and channels,” the release said.

The full brand rollout is expected to be completed by the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The modern Olympics are widely known with the five Olympic rings — blue, black, red, yellow and green, which was designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, but the latest evolution is aiming to bring the legacy of the games into the modern world.

“The evolved brand pushes further the Olympic brand identity through a vibrant extended palette based on the Olympic colours, inspirational illustrations and tailor-made typography,” said May Guerraoui, Head of Brand Management at the IOC. “It’s about leveraging a new design system to communicate the brand values with emotion.”

The new design system, created by Canadian agency Hulse & Durrell and a team of international artists, typographers and designers, features three custom-made typefaces, a series of graphic devices, 17 illustrations and a set of guidelines for how to incorporate the identity.

“Every element has been designed to reflect the hopeful, universal, inclusive, vibrant and progressive qualities of the Olympic brand, for use across publications, digital, environment design and more,” the IOC release said.

Australia vice-captain Rachel Haynes announces retirement from international cricket

Melbourne,/(PTI) Australian women's cricket team star batter and vice- captain Rachel Haynes on Thursday announced her retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtains down on an illustrious career.

The 35-year-old southpaw, who made her international debut back in 2009, represented her country in six Tests, 77 ODIs, and 84 T20Is.

"To all the teammates across my career, you are the reason I've played as long as I have. You've inspired me to be better every day. I've learnt something from all of you, on and off the field," Haynes said in a statement.

"You've challenged me as a player, helped me grow as a person and most importantly, made cricket fun," she added.

Haynes is the ninth highest run-getter for Australia in both the limited overs formats, having scored 2585 runs in ODIs at an average of 39.76 and 850 runs in T20Is, averaging 26.56.

She has served as Australia's vice-captain since 2018. Since then, Australia have bagged three World Cups -- one 50-over and two T20 -- and also a gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this year.

"One of the great things about having a long career is watching those around you develop. I'm extremely proud of the way this team has brought players in and nurtured their development," she said.

"The ability to help players transition smoothly has been instrumental to our team's success. To be a leader within this environment has been the greatest privilege of my career," she added.

Haynes, however, will continue to play in the Women's Big Bash League with the Sydney Thunder from next month but will not be part of the New South Wales team's domestic campaign, starting next week.

"On behalf of everyone at Cricket Australia I'd like to congratulate Rachael on an amazing career and also recognise the outstanding contribution she has made off the field," said Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia chief executive.

Mohammedan continued to attack and Marcus in particular missed a few gilt-edged opportunities. Then Chernyshov made an inspired double substitution bringing in Abhash Thapa and Faslu Rahman with just over 10 minutes of the game left.

The two subs combined effectively as Man of the Match Faslu got at the end of an Abhash cross and Mohammedan were well on their way to avenge last year’s final defeat. Then with the game in stoppage time, Marcus tapped in from close to make it 3-1 to the joy of the 30,000 odd local supporters in the stadium.

The game was preceded by an opening ceremony where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the Chief Guest. There were Army Bands on display and singers Papon and Rewben Mashangwa rendered the tournament theme song, before the Chief Guest was introduced to the players and support staff of both teams.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been suspended by FIFA, the world’s governing body of football, “immediately owing to improper influence from third parties,” endangering the country’s hosting of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in October.

Up till the ban is lifted, the AIFF won’t be able to compete in any international matches.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes,” stated an official media release, issued by FIFA.

When the order to establish a committee of administrators to take over the duties of the AIFF Executive Committee has been revoked and the AIFF administration has complete control over the organisation’s daily operations, it was said that the suspension would be lifted.

“The suspension means that the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, scheduled to take place in India on 11-30 October 2022, cannot currently be held in India as planned,” the statement further read.

FIFA is assessing the next steps with regard to the tournament and will refer the matter to the Bureau of the Council if and when necessary. “FIFA is in constant constructive contact with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India and is hopeful that a positive outcome to the case may still be achieved.”

The 24-year-old Chopra, who had entered the showpiece as a hot medal favourite in javelin throw, produced a best throw of 88.13m to finish second behind defending champion Anderson Peters of Grenada (90.54m) and become only the second Indian and first male track and field athlete to win a medal at the World Championships

"A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours," PM Modi tweeted

The first ever torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad was given a rousing welcome upon its arrival at Raipur city in Chhattisgarh on Saturday. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Umesh Patel, several sports associations, sportspersons, school children and public representatives welcomed the torch. Chess Grandmaster and Arjuna Awardee Mr. Praveen Thipsay carried the torch and formally handed it over to Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel at a function held at Pt. Deendayal Auditorium here. They also played a game of Chess on the stage. Mr. Baghel handed over this torch to the state's chess player, Woman FIDE Master, Ms. Kiran Agarwal. Ms. Agarwal along with State Chess Association General Secretary Mr. Vinod Rathi will carry this torch to Hyderabad. The 44th Chess Olympiad is being organized in India for the first time as a part of 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. This torch relay will pass through 75 cities of the country with Raipur being the 61st stop. Chandrashekhar are part of the organizing committee. A total of six players selected from different schools of the state will also participate in the Olympiad.

Speaking about how Chess is being promoted in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Baghel said that on the initiative of All India Chess Federation, work has been started to promote chess in 22 schools of the state. Balod has become the first district in the country to start the ‘Chess in School’ pilot project. Arrangements to play chess will be made in all schools. Adani and GMR buy teams in Ultimate Kho Kho

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) Corporate giants Adani Group and GMR group have acquired the Gujarat and Telangana franchises respectively in the 'Ultimate Kho Kho' league, which is set to start this year with an aim to promote indigenous sport.

The franchise based kho kho league is promoted by Dabur Group chairman Amit Burman in collaboration with Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI).

"Our experience with the Kabaddi and Boxing League gives us confidence that the Ultimate Kho Kho League will do wonders for this much-loved traditional sport,' Pranav Adani, Director-Adani Enterprises was quoted as saying in a press release.

"Our decision to partner with this league is an extension of our aim to build a world-class ecosystem that nurtures sporting talent, accelerates the sports economy and plays the role of an enabler in India's journey to become a leading sporting nation."

GMR Sports has picked up the Telangana team, to tap on the popularity of kho kho in South India and promote it further.

"Since its inception, over 15 years ago, the company has done pioneering work in growing popular sports such as cricket and other indigenous sports like Kabaddi and Wrestling across India and overseas," said Kiran Kumar Grandhi, Corporate Chairman, GMR Group.

Ultimate Kho Kho will broadcast live on Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) and its dedicated OTT platform SonyLIV.

FIFA World Cup: Airfare to Qatar shoot up 1900% as Dubai expects to fill accommodation shortfall

Considering a shortage of accommodation in Doha for the huge influx of football fans for this year-end’s Fifa World Cup in Qatar, the tourism industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expecting Dubai and other tourist destinations to be the choice of stay by fans who can then commute for matches.

The airfares to Dubai and Qatar have seen an unprecedented rise of 1900 percent. The reason is the football World Cup. It is scheduled to be held from November 21 and December 18 in Qatar this year. The tourism industry is set for a boom in Qatar and the UAE . Football fans from across the world want to be there during this period.

Around 23.5 million enthusiastic football fans from around the world have applied for the tickets and though Qatar is going to add around 5000 more hotel rooms, there is still going to be a shortage, and countries in the GCC region, especially UAE, are expecting to fill the shortfall.

Authorities in UAE are confident that Dubai will be a place of choice to stay for World Cup visitors from other regions.

People associated with the tourism industry in UAE are expecting that travel from UAE to Qatar will be greatly accelerated during the event as football fans will fly to Doha from UAE to watch the matches, thus resulting in a substantial increase in prices.

Data from airlines show that one-way economy class airfare, which ranges from Dh360 (approx INR 7,604.74) to Dh 3,370 (INR 71,188.66approx) as of May 25, has already increased to Dh 7,110 (INR 150,194.30 approx) on November 20, a day before the start of the mega event.

Currently, UAE carriers Flydubai, Etihad, and Air Arabia and Qatar’s national carrier Qatar Airways operate flights between the two Gulf countries. Recently it was reported that Israel would also request Qatar to operate direct flights between the two countries during the FIFA World Cup.

Raheesh Babu, COO, Musafir.com, said that they are still waiting for more clarity from airlines. They are confident that people will be willing to stay outside of Qatar and visit the country for the matches only. Additionally, they are expecting airlines to significantly increase operations to accommodate the demand.

Although Doha has invested heavily in hotel accommodation and infrastructure for the world’s biggest sporting event, a shortfall remains, meaning many will stop for tournaments in neighbouring Gulf countries. Industry people in UAE are expecting Dubai to be their preferred choice.

Dubai-based realtors have said football fans are paying for short-term rentals in the Emirate. This could mean a bumper tourism season for the GCC, especially the UAE. In Dubai, estate agents are already seeing a surge in demand.

Around 23.5 million enthusiastic football fans from around the world have applied for the ticket sales draw. Most applications have been made by fans living in Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Apart from eager applications for the final, the most prestigious matches include Argentina v Mexico, Argentina v Saudi Arabia, England v USA and Poland v Argentina. Ticket applicants will be notified of their fate by email from May 31, 2022, beginning with the scheduled payment period.

Meanwhile, FIFA has told police chiefs of competing countries around the world, at a conference in Doha, that the main security concern of the 2022 World Cup would be controlling hundreds of thousands of football fans in Qatar’s capital.

FIFA Safety Director Helmut Spahn told attendees that securing the most geographically-compact World Cup is one of the tournament’s biggest challenges. The longest distance between any two of the eight stadiums is approximately 70 kilometers. Police representatives from competing countries will assess World Cup stadiums at the conference and evaluate transportation in Doha.

Mumbai: Nikhat Zareen who on Thursday scripted history by clinching the gold medal in the Women’s World Boxing Championships called Salman Khan ‘meri jaan’ recently.

The young boxer made this confession in a recent interview when she was asked if ‘Salman bhai’ congratulated her yet. She said “Kaun bhai? Aapka bhai? Maine kabhi bhai nahi kaha. Come on I never called him ‘bhai’. Logon ka bhai hoga woh, meri jaan hai”.

Sharing the video of the interview, Salman Khan congratulated her for making India proud.

Seeing the tweet of the actor, Zareen wrote, “It’s one of my favourite dreams that have come true”. “Thank you so much for making my win more special”, she added.

Responding to the tweet, Salman Khan wrote, “Just don’t knock me out”.

From there onwards, it was no looking back for Saha, pulling Simarjeet Singh over deep mid-wicket for six in the fifth over followed by thumping one over the bowler’s head for a boundary. Saha’s fast and furious start allowed Shubman Gill to take his time and bring out the pull as well as sweep to take boundaries off Mitchell Santner.

But Matheesha Pathirana, the pacer with an uncanny resemblance to countryman Lasith Malinga’s sling-arm bowling action, bagged his maiden IPL wicket by trapping Gill lbw with a full, pacy delivery which hit him low on the pad as the right-hander attempted to flick. Gill reviewed but was unable to overturn the decision, ending the 59-run opening partnership.

Matthew Wade got going with a brace of boundaries off Pathirana but fell while trying to loft against Moeen Ali in the 12th over and mistimed to long-on. Two overs later, Pathirana got his second wicket when his off-cutter took the leading edge off Hardik Pandya’s attempted flick and was caught by mid-on.

Saha, meanwhile, hanged around to reach his third fifty of the tournament in 42 balls and shared an unbeaten 37-run stand with David Miller to take Gujarat past the finishing line. Fittingly, it was Saha who hit the winning runs – guiding one past short third man off Pathirana to give another convincing win to Gujarat.

Riding high on momentum, RCB could be too strong for inconsistent Punjab

Mumbai, (PTI) Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have found much-needed momentum towards the business end of IPL, will back themselves to ride past an inconsistent Punjab Kings and get closer to a play-off spot here on Friday.

Having put up complete performances in their last two games, RCB seemed to have figured out their best combination.

Barring Virat Kohli, all of their batters are in top form with uncapped Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror complementing seasoned pros like skipper Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik, who has been among the best finishers in the tournament alongside Gujarat's Rahul Tewatia.

The bowling packs a punch too in the presence of in-form pacers Josh Hazlewood and the ever-reliable Harshal Patel. Mohammad Siraj has not been at his best but trust him to deliver when the team wants it the most.

Maxwell has been handy with his off-spin, both in powerplay and middle overs, while Wanindu Hasaranga is among the leading wicket-takers in the tournament with 21 scalps including a five-wicket haul.

"What we are trying to get better as a team is making sure that one of those top-four creates a bit of a base. We have got some really strong hitters at the back.

"The games where we didn't do so well, there was a big cluster of wickets in the powerplay. Obviously need some stability but at the same time you gonna make sure you don't go into defensive mode," said du Plessis after the massive win over SRH.

Kohli, who is in the middle of his worst IPL season, is due for an impact knock and that could come against Punjab. A win on Friday would take RCB to 16 points though 18 seems to be a safe number for a play-off berth.

Punjab, who have three games left, need to win all to have a shot at the top-four finish. They had started their campaign with a win over RCB and are on 10 points with five wins and six losses.

The fact that they have not been able to win two games in a row sums up their inconsistent run.

Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa have delivered at the top, so has Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma in finishing the innings. Jonny Bairstow finally got runs after being promoted to open the innings alongside Dhawan.

Skipper Mayank Agarwal, who has moved himself down the order, needs to lead from the front.

On the bowling front, Sandeep Sharma has been tidy but could do with some wickets in the powerplay. Lead pacer Kagiso Rabada has done well to take 18 wickets but has gone for close to 9 runs per over.

Arshdeep Singh has been brilliant, especially in the death overs, and has impressed many with his ability to land yorkers at will.

Despite a solid squad at their disposal, Punjab have flattered to deceive and they must raise their game before it is too late yet again.

Odisha, Himachal win in Senior National Women's Hockey

Bhopal, May 10 (PTI) Odisha and Himachal Pradesh registered convincing wins over their respective pool H opponents on day 5 of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship here on Tuesday.

In the first game of the day, Odisha beat Kerala 11-0, while Himachal defeated Telangana Hockey 8-0 in another fixture.

On Monday, Jharkhand had registered a 10-0 win over Andhra Pradesh in a Pool E match.

Indian para-powerlifter Paramjeet Kumar bags medal at Worlds

Paramjeet, competing in the 49kg category, lifted 158 kg to grab the Bronze medal while Omar Shami Qarada of Egypt won the gold medal after lifting 174kg

Paramjeet Kumar became the first Indian para-powerlifter to clinch a medal in the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia on Sunday.

Paramjeet, competing in the 49kg category, lifted 158 kg to grab the Bronze medal while Omar Shami Qarada of Egypt won the gold medal after lifting 174kg. Viatnam’s Van Cong Le won the silver medal with a total of 170kg.

“History created for India in Para @Powerlifting by Paramjit Kumar of Punjab as he wins #bronze at the ongoing World Para Powerlifting Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia. Paramjit’s 158KG Lift has created history! Cheer for @ParalympicIndia team as the championship continues!” President of the Paralympic Committee of India, Deepa Malik tweeted.

“Parmjeet Kumar wins 1st medal (BRONZE) in the men’s up to 49kg category at the ongoing World Para-Powerlifting C’ships 2021 Parmjeet’s medal-winning lift was 158kg He is a #KheloIndia Athlete training at @SAI_Gandhinagar Many congratulations,” SAI Media tweeted.

Parmjeet has earlier won a bronze medal in the 49kg category at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia. He is a resident of Haripur Khalsa village, 22 km from Ludhiana, Punjab.

A ten-member Indian Para-powerlifting squad including, Manreet Singh (41 kg, Punjab), Sakina Khatun (45 kg Karnataka), Raj Kumari (55 kg, Delhi), Geeta (67kg, Haryana), and Bhawana Sharma (86 kg, Rajasthan) are competing in’the women’s category while Parmjit Kumar (49 kg, Punjab), Ashok (65 kg, Haryana), Jai Deep (73 kg, Haryana), Sudhir (88 kg, Haryana,) and Sachin Chaudhary (107 kg Uttar Pradesh) are participat’ng in men’s category.
