Bore Baasi": The Affordable and Nutritious Superfood
Boost your health with Chhattisgarh's nutrient-dense traditional dish
Dhananjay Rathore, G.S. Kesharwani
Raipur, TNINS
If we attempt to understand what "Bore Baasi" is, we would discover that it is actually fermented rice. The cooked rice is soaked in leftover rice water ('Maad') and additional water and kept overnight with a lid, and is consumed in the morning, which is known as "Bore Baasi." This process adds several health-promoting properties to the rice, making it more beneficial than regular rice. Diabetic patients can substitute regular rice with Kodo rice, and individuals with high blood pressure can consume this traditional dish from Chhattisgarh by using a small amount of rock salt instead of regular salt. Overall, "Bore Baasi" is an inexpensive and nutritious superfood.
Dr. Anil Gupta has explained that the fermentation process removes excess fat from "Bore Baasi" while also increasing its levels of vitamin B-complex, vitamin K, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and selenium. Additionally, the fermentation process enriches "Bore Baasi" with beneficial probiotics such as Lactobacillus and lactic acid bacteria. Fermentation creates probiotics that strengthen digestion and provide benefits for many gastrointestinal diseases, as well as improving the body's immune system.
He further stated that according to research, 100 grams of rice contains 3.4 milligrams of iron. If it is soaked in water for 12 hours, the amount of iron increases several times, which is beneficial for the body. It also contains potassium and calcium and aids in digestion. It also helps in maintaining hydration levels in the body and keeps the body and mind cool in summer. It is not only delicious but also nutritious and budget-friendly food. It serves as an energy food for workers and is a superfood for everyone

Free elbow soft tissue release surgery changes young girl's life
Helps Seema overcome her decade-long elbow problem
Raipur TNINS
Seema, who had been struggling with right elbow contracture since birth, can now straighten her hand completely like other children thanks to the elbow soft tissue release surgery performed by doctors at the DKS Superspeciality Hospital in Raipur. Her life has been filled with joy and enthusiasm as she was able to undergo the surgery for free under the Chirayu Scheme of the National Child Health Program. She has finally been able to overcome her problem of having a fixed elbow with the hard work of the doctors at the DKS hospital and the proactive efforts of the Chirayu team in Sarangarh.
When the Sarangarh Community Health Center Chirayu team of the newly formed Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district arrived at the Jhilgitar primary school for health examinations, they came face to face with 10-year-old Seema's decade-long problem. Her right elbow had been turned at a 90-degree angle since birth, making it impossible for her to straighten it. This condition is referred to as contracture of the right elbow or distal arthrogryposis of the right elbow in medical terminology. The Chirayu team encouraged Seema's family, provided guidance, and referred them to DKS Superspeciality Hospital in Raipur for treatment.
After getting admitted to DKS Hospital, Seema underwent her first surgery or casting on February 16 this year, under the guidance of pediatric orthopedic Dr Raman Srivastava. The cast was opened a few days later to assess its softness. Prior to the operation, casting was done six times. Two months later, on April 11 and 15, Seema underwent surgery for elbow soft tissue release at the pediatric orthopedic department of DKS Hospital.
Generally, such operations incur a high cost in private hospitals. However, Seema's hand surgery was performed completely free of cost under the Chirayu scheme, which is a part of the National Child Health Program. Following this operation, she will now be able to straighten her hand completely like other children. Seema's relatives have expressed their gratitude to the state government, health department, and the Chirayu team for all the assistance.

Now we will extinguish forest fires…this is what women belonging to Jai Maa Sharda Women’s Self-help Group under the Beltara Circle, clad in green sarees as a symbol of greenery, are saying while protecting the forests from fires. These women understand the significance of forests and therefore have come forward to save forests. They are providing their free contribution while working alongside forest workers.
It is noteworthy that protecting forests from fires is of crucial importance. According to the Forest Department, the fire season started on 15 February and it is the department’s priority to protect the forests from fires. In this regard, the Forest Department is also conducting an awareness campaign to save the forests from fire. Influenced by the awareness campaign, the women belonging to Jai Maa Sharda Women’s Group under Bilaspur came forward voluntarily and presented their proposal before the Forest Department to save forests
Because of the enthusiasm and awareness amongst women, the Divisional Forest Officer of Bilaspur Mr. Kumar Nishant has instructed his subordinate forest officers that women who have come forward should be trained to extinguish forest fires and should be encouraged to take up this special initiative, The Forest Department, as a symbol of greenery, has provided them a uniform of green sarees, and have been trained to use fire blower machines to control forest fires. The village women are engaged in the work of protecting forests from fire free of cost. In this work, forest workers are also working alongside the women.
Bilaspur is the first Forest Department in Chhattisgarh that is conducting a unique initiative to protect its forest’s natural regeneration, herbs, precious wood, fruits, and flowers. Signifying the maxim of ‘Forest is life’, these women have understood that they use herbs, fruits, and flowers for themselves, which provide them an extra income and these forests are their precious heritage. We must protect forests while keeping in mind future generations. All these women, in view of these sentiments, right after receiving the news of forest fires, immediately head to forests with forest workers to extinguish the forest fire. The women who have taken this responsibility include Ramshila Bai Sorthe, Anarkali Ayam, Sonam Bai, Sat Kumari Maravi, Uma Mahant, Janki Bai, and others.
