Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Golam Sarwar has been appointed as the Secretary General of SAARC, the South Asian regional alliance.

He is the 15th Secretary General. And High Commissioner Golam Sarwar appointed to Malaysia is the third Bangladeshi to become the Secretary General of SAARC.

Professional diplomat Ghulam Sarwar was earlier Bangladesh's Ambassador to Oman. Golam Sarwar, a BCS 10th batch (Foreign Affairs) officer, joined the Ministry of External Affairs in 1991.

Golam Sarwar has also served as the Ambassador of Bangladesh in Sweden. Apart from this, he served in various positions in Bangladesh Mission in Jeddah, Washington DC, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur and Yangon.
