Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday initiated a crowdsourcing campaign to choose the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for as part of its efforts to trump the BJP in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, Gujarat’s elections.

With a host of pre-poll promises such as free electricity, better education and healthcare facilities, “Choose Your Chief Minister” campaign is the latest push by the Delhi Chief Minister who has been aggressively campaigning in the state.

Taking a jibe on Chief Minister change in the state, Kejriwal in a news conference, said that, “People want change. They want relief from inflation, unemployment. These people (BJP) changed their Chief Minister one year ago. They first had Vijay Rupani. Why did they replace him with Bhupendra Patel? Does this mean that there was something wrong with Vijay Rupani?”

Kejriwal asserted, “When Vijay Rupani was brought, the public was not asked. It was decided from Delhi. In democracy, the people decide who will be the Chief Minister. Neither did you (BJP) ask in 2016, nor did you ask in 2021.”

Claiming the Aam Aadmi Party different from BJP, Delhi CM highlighted that, “We decide by asking the public who do you want to be the Chief Minister. You will remember that in Punjab, we asked the people who should be the Chief Minister. And according to the wishes of the people, we named Bhagwant Mann.”

“Aam Aadmi Party is going to form a government in Gujarat. In such a situation, whoever is our Chief Ministerial candidate will be the next Chief Minister of Gujarat. So today, we ask the public that you tell us who should be your Chief Minister,” he assured.

“For this, we are issuing a number 6357000360 to know the opinion of the public. On this number you can SMS or send WhatsApp message or send voice message. You can also email [email protected]. So, there are four ways for the public to let us know of their choice,” Kejriwal announced.

“This number will be operational till 5:00 pm on 3rd November. The results will be placed before he public on 4th November,” he mentioned.

Elections to the 182-member Gujarat Legislative Assembly are to be held by the end of this year. However, the dates are yet to be announced.

LPG cylinder explosion In Bihar 30 people injured

Patna (Agencies): A cylinder of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) exploded in the Aurangabad district of Bihar on Saturday, injuring at least 30 people, including seven police and fire officials.

An explosion at 3 a.m. caused a big fire to break out in a two-story building in the Sahibganj neighbourhood.

According to the authorities, the women were making "Kharna Prasad" for the Chhath puja festival. As a result of the explosion caused by the leaking LPG cylinder, the adjacent homes also sustained damage.

"The explosion happened in Anil Goshwami's house at 3 a.m., as he was making prasad for the Chatth Puja. After receiving reports from nearby residents, we dispatched fire trucks to the scene. The blaze was really severe. Residents and police officers sought to put out the fire and were injured in the process "remarked an Aurangabad fire department employee.

Constable Preeti Kumari, Constables Akhilesh Kumar and Jaglal Prasad of the DAP, and Constables Mukund Rao, Mohammad Mozammi, Anil Oria, and Rajiv Kumar of the SAP were among the seven police officers injured.

Mohammad Shabbir, Mohammad Aslam, Sudarshan, Arian Goswami, Mohammad Chotu Alam, Anil Kumar, and Shahnawaz were were among the 30 injured.

The district's Sadar hospital has taken in the majority of the injured, the majority of whom are in severe condition.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on Friday, joined hundreds of monks from Japan, America, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan to celebrate the golden jubilee of Dhauli Peace Pagoda on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

A large number of Buddhist monks from across the globe participated in a march in Bhubaneswar on Thursday as part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Peace Pagoda at Dhauli.

Giving a clarion call for world peace on the occasion, Patnaik said, “Peace has no alternative. It has significance for all ages. Peace is the only option to achieve the goals of a better and beautiful world.”

“Let us work together to spread the message of peace and create a safer world for our future generation,” he said.

Delving into the glorious history of Odisha, the chief minister said, “pages of Odisha history start with Dhauli and the Kalinga war. Although the war ended with massive bloodshed, Dhauli continues to sing in praise of the moral victory of the entire humanity. It is this place where Ashoka realised the futility of war and bloodshed and embraced Buddhism. In fact, Dhauli changed the course of world history by spreading the message of global peace and harmony.”

Calling the commemoration of the 50th year of the establishment of Dhauli Shanti Stupa a matter of great pride, glory, and joy for all of us, Naveen Patnaik said this is the land that transformed Emperor Asoka into “Dharmashoka” (the Pious Ashoka). The Shanti Stupa (memorial of peace) stands here as a monument symbolising and spreading the message of peace, harmony, and progress, he added.

Dhauli Peace Pagoda is a great creation of modern architecture. It bears a testimony to the Indo-Japanese friendship that stands for global peace and mutual cooperation. The place will continue to spread the message of peace for all the time to come, he said.

“On the eve of this momentous occasion, I offer my sincere tributes to the most revered Nichidatsu Fuji Guruji of Japan, founder and preceptor of Nipponzan Myohoji, for his invaluable contribution towards building this “Biswa Shanti Stupa” at Dhauli. Further, the steps taken by Kalinga-Nippon Buddha Sangha to make it happen are also appreciated”, he said while offering tributes to Fuji Guruji.

Patnaik expressed gratitude to the Revered Takao Takedo of Japan, Bhikshu, and Bhikshuni of Nipponzan Myohoji for conducting the Morning Prayer for spreading global peace and harmony.

The Odisha Government has taken steps for the beautification and holistic development of Dhauli Shanti Stupa to make it an international tourist destination, he said.

On the occasion, the chief minister announced the construction of Instream Storage on the Daya River at Basantpur at an estimated cost of Rs 95 crore. The tender process for the project has already been started.

He extended his warm greetings and good wishes to all the revered Bhikshus, saints, and the august gathering present here from across the globe.

New York, Oct 28 (PTI) "The bird is freed," billionaire Elon Musk tweeted on Friday after completing the whopping USD 44 billion takeover of Twitter and firing the social media giant's four top executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal and legal executive Vijaya Gadde.

The New York Times said that Musk, the world's richest man, closed the deal to buy Twitter on Thursday. "The bird is freed," Musk, 51, tweeted after closing the deal. Citing people with knowledge of the situation, the report said that Musk “has started cleaning house at Twitter with the firings of at least four top executives”.

The Twitter executives who were fired include Agrawal, Gadde, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal and General Counsel Sean Edgett. “At least one of the executives who was fired was escorted out of Twitter’s office,” the report said.

Hyderabad: (PTI) After a gap of four days, the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed from Makthal in Narayanpet district of Telangana on Thursday, sources in the Congress party said.

The yatra kicked off at 6.30 am from Makthal with State Congress president A. Revanth Reddy, MP Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka and a number of party leaders joining Gandhi.

This is the second day of the yatra in the state. The Bharat Jodo Yatra entered the state via Gudebellur on October 23 morning, after exiting Karnataka from Raichur.

After a brief march, it took a break from Sunday noon till October 26.

Gandhi who left for the national capital on October 23, landed here last night and left for Gudebellur by road.

The Gandhi scion-led march is expected to complete 26.7 km on Thursday, before halting for the day at Sri Balaji Factory, Makthal for the night, according to party sources.

From Makthal, the yatra will continue for 16 days in Telangana state, covering 19 Assembly and 7 Parliamentary constituencies spanning a distance of 375 km, before entering Maharashtra on November 7.

The yatra will take a one-day break on November 4.

The Wayanad MP will meet intellectuals, leaders of various communities, including personalities from the sporting, business and entertainment sectors.

He will also visit prayer halls, mosques and temples across Telangana, and will offer prayers, members of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee said.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra commenced on September 7 from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.

Gandhi completed the marathon walk in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, before beginning the Telangana leg of the yatra.

The Telangana State Congress has formed 10 special committees to coordinate the yatra.

Honey-trapped swami's chat with lady surfaces in Lingayat seer suicide case

Bengaluru (The Hawk): An alleged video chat of the deceased with a woman came on public domain on Thursday, days after Lingayat seer Basavalinga Sree of Kanchugal Mutt in Ramanagar district died by suicide, raising suspicions that he was honey-trapped.

According to police, the discovery proves that the seer was targeted. A gang of important persons honey trapped Basavalinga Sree and gathered evidence against him.

Devotees argue that the video clip was not shot on the mutt grounds. They report that the deceased seer wore a gold karadige (a shivling wrapped in a little box and worn around the neck) that is now missing, and that he only wore a rudraksha mala when he went out.

Three ladies are being questioned in connection with the swamiji honey trap. The authorities are investigating whether the voice in the video footage is similar to one of the three ladies.

Investigations into the suicide case had previously revealed that the deceased seer had been honey-trapped, tormented, and forced to end his life.

Investigations have also shown that another Lingayat seer is plotting to take over the position behind this conspiracy.

According to police, a team of 10 to 15 people, including politicians, worked on and carried out the plot. According to investigators, the deceased seer was methodically honeytrapped and blackmailed over the publication of images and recordings of his private moments.

The Kudur police, who have taken over the inquiry, have already put a few people into custody and are looking into the incident. In his death note, the deceased swamiji alleged torture and honey trapping.

The AAP national convener's demand drew sharp reactions from the Congress with its Punjab unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja accusing Kejriwal of resorting to "competitive Hindutva" to outwit the BJP in poll-bound Gujarat.

Reacting to Kejriwal's statement, Tewari, a Congress MP from Punjab's Anandpur Sahib, tweeted, "Why not Dr Babasahib Ambedkar's photograph on new series of currency notes? On one side the great Mahatma (Gandhi) the other side Dr (B R) Ambedkar." Delhiites working hard but still a long way to go: Kejriwal on Delhi pollution

New Delhi, Oct 25 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the results of efforts made by Delhi residents to curb pollution in the city are encouraging but there is still a long way to go.

His remarks came a day after Diwali when the air quality in the national capital was recorded in the 'very poor' category. The situation, however, was relatively better than previous years due to favourable meteorological conditions which diluted the effect of many residents flouting a firecracker ban and stubble burning.

Delhi's air quality index (AQI) stood at 326 at 8 am. "Delhiites are working hard in the field of pollution. There have been very encouraging results but there is still a long way to go. We will make Delhi the best city in the world," Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Kolkata/Bhubaneswar, (PTI) The deep depression over Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclone on Sunday evening and is very likely to gather further strength becoming a severe cyclonic storm before crossing the Bangladesh coast on October 25 morning, the IMD said.

The cyclone, named Sitrang by Thailand, is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Monday with wind speed reaching 90 to 100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

It is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rain in the coastal districts of West Bengal and isolated heavy rain in north coastal Odisha, it said.

MP: 15 killed, more than 35 injured as UP-bound bus rams into stationary truck in Rewa

Rewa (MP), Oct 22 (PTI) Fifteen persons were killed and more than 35 others injured, some of them seriously, after an Uttar Pradesh-bound bus collided with a stationary truck in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Saturday. The accident occurred around 11.30 pm on Friday near Teonthar town, he said. "The bus was on its way to Gorakhpur (in UP) from Hyderabad when it collided with a stationary trailer-truck on national highway (NH) 30 near Sohagi Ghati area," Rewa collector Manoj Pushp said.

While 12 persons were killed on the spot, two others succumbed while being taken to a hospital from Teonthar to Rewa. Later, one more person succumbed to injuries at the hospital in Rewa, he said. "Fifteen persons were killed in the accident, which left more than 35 others injured," Rewa district's superintendent of police (SP) said.

After being alerted about the incident, police personnel from Sohagi rushed to the site and launched a rescue operation. Majority of the bus passengers were labourers and they were on their way home for the Diwali festival, eyewitnesses said.

Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus Andhra Pradesh ,60 passengers barely made it out alive

Vijayawada (AGENCY ): When a state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus caught fire in Andhra Pradesh on Friday, at least 60 passengers barely made it out alive.

On Friday morning, the tragedy took place in the Krishna district close to Ventrapragada.

With 60 people, including students, the bus operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) was travelling from Gudivada to Vijayawada.

The bus's engine sparked the fire. An vigilant driver pulled over and ordered the passengers out of the car after spotting smoke. Because everyone got off the bus safely before the fire spread throughout the entire vehicle, a serious catastrophe was avoided.

The incident didn't result in any injuries. However, since the car was completely destroyed, the occupants lost their things. Some of them misplaced money, jewellery made of gold, and other valuables.

As soon as it arrived, a fire engine put out the flames. Police opened an investigation after filing a case.

Chhattisgarh is being recognized and appreciated at national level for its various achievements and innovations in the fields of education, health, nutrition, agriculture and farmer welfare, infrastructure etc, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel. This time, Chhattisgarh has received two prestigious awards under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Award 2021 at the Indian Urban Housing Conclave being organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India from 19 to 21 October 2022 in Rajkot, Gujarat. The last leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi will be taken up in Karnataka from Friday. The padayatra will enter the Raichur district of Karnataka from Mantralaya in Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, party sources confirmed that another scion of the Gandhi family, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is most likely to take part in the padayatra on Saturday.

The padayatra resumed from Mantralaya Temple Circle in Andhra Pradesh at 6 a.m. It will enter Karnataka’s Gillesegur in Raichur district at 10 a.m.

The Congress leaders will take up padayatra for three days in the district. The padayatra will cross the Tungabhadra bridge and pass through Yaragera, Raichur city and Shakthinagar.

Rahul Gandhi is interacting with the farmers and local people during the Yatra. He is staying at the Ranganatha Swamy Temple at Yaragera village.

On October 23, the padayatra will enter Telangana. The Congress leaders have been tasked with gathering 20,000 to 30,000 people during the yatra.

The police department has deputed 2,000 police personnel to ensure security. Padayatra has so far got a good response from the people in the state. Sonia Gandhi had also taken part in the padayatra briefly in Mandya district of south Karnataka.

The Congress party leaders are upbeat about the padayatra and they maintain that the party has gained right momentum in the run up to the state Assembly elections. The elections are scheduled to be held in another six months in Karnataka.

The internal survey conducted by the Congress leaders has shown that it will obtain a simple majority in the state Assembly elections.

The padayatra entered Karnataka on September 30. It will cover 511 kilometres of distance in the state.

Bilkis Bano case : The Gujarati government has informed the Supreme Court defendants was charged with insulting a woman's modesty

New Delhi : The Gujarati government has informed the Supreme Court that one of the Bilkis Bano case defendants was charged with insulting a woman's modesty in 2020 while on parole.

In response to petitions opposing the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, the state government filed a 477-page affidavit with the Supreme Court. Before being released on the terms of a life sentence reduction, it was claimed that the prisoners had been out of custody for about 1,000 days.

Mitesh Chamanlal Bhatt, one of the prisoners, was arrested and charged with violating the IPC's Sections 354 (outraging the modesty of women), 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation), each of which carries a potential sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

The state administration also stated that all prisoners received furloughs, parole, and even temporary bail at various times throughout their terms of detention, with 1,576 days being the longest and 998 days being the shortest.

In a letter dated May 25, 2022, the District Magistrate of Dahod provided information regarding Bhatt. In accordance with sections 432-433A of the CrPC, which deal with the suspension and remission of sentence for offenders, he expressed his view regarding his early release.

The letter stated that a complaint had been filed against Bhatt in the Dahod district's Randhikpur police station, that a charge sheet had been submitted, and that the case was currently before the court's administrative board. According to the letter, the incident happened on June 19, 2020, and since then, Bhatt has taken 281 leaves out of the 954 parole and furlough days that have been granted to him as of today, May 25, 2022.

After taking into account the views of the police sub-inspector from Randhikpur and the deputy superintendent of police from Limkheda, the Collector did not object to Bhatt's early release.

The Gujarat government informed the Supreme Court in an affidavit that it had chosen to release the 11 defendants in the Bilkis Bano case because they had served at least 14 years in prison, had been judged to have good behaviour, and had received "concurrence/approval" from the Center.

The state government further stated that the Special Civil Judge (CBI), City Civil and Sessions Court, Greater Bombay, and the Superintendent of Police, CBI, Special Crime Branch, Mumbai, had opposed the convicts' early release in March of last year.

In letters to the superintendent of the Godhra Sub-Jail, the CBI official stated that because the criminal offence committed by the convicts was heinous, serious, and grave, they could not be freed early.

"The Government of India expressed the concurrence/approval of the Central Government under section 435 of the CrPC for premature release of 11 offenders," the undersecretary of the state's home department stated in an affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the state government took into account the recommendations of seven organisations: the CBI, the Special Crime Branch in Mumbai, the Inspector General of Prisons in Gujarat, the Jail Superintendents, the Jail Advisory Committee, the District Magistrate, the Police Superintendent, and the Sessions Court in Mumbai.

The Gujarat government's response followed a petition filed by Prof. Roop Rekha Verma, Revati Laul, a journalist, and former CPI-M MP Subhasini Ali, which contested the release of 11 men convicted of several killings and the gang rape of Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Mahua Moitra, a member of the Trinamool Congress, and others have filed petitions against the release of the prisoners.

The top court set a follow-up hearing for November 29 after giving petitioners until October 18 to respond to the state government's rebuttal affidavit.

UN Secretary General Guterres pays tributes to 26/11 terror attacks victims in Mumbai

Mumbai ;(PTI) UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday paid tributes to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai on the first day of his three-day visit to India.

Accompanied by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Guterres placed a foral wreath at the 26/11 attacks memorial in the hotel.

It is the UN chief's first visit to India since his second term in office commenced in January. He had earlier visited the country in October 2018 during his first term at the top office.

Guterres landed in Mumbai on Wednesday shortly after midnight via a commercial flight from London. He was greeted by senior Maharashtra government officials on arrival.

He later drove to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in south Mumbai, where he paid tributes to the victims of the 26/11 terror attacks.

The Taj Mahal Palace hotel was one of the targets of the horrific 26/11 terror attacks in 2008.

Guterres will deliver a public address at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai on the subject -- "India @75: UN-India Partnership: Strengthening South-South Cooperation" later in the day, before flying to Gujarat.

The UN secretary general will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event relating to the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) in Gujarat's Kevadiya on October 20.

His visit to the country comes more than a week before the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee holds its two-day deliberations in India.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar would hold bilateral discussions with Guterres on issues of global concern, steps to deepen India's engagement with the UN, including through the country's upcoming presidency of the G20.

In Kevadiya, Guterres is expected to pay floral tributes at the Statue of Unity, the MEA said, adding that he will also visit the country's first solar-powered village in Modhera (Gujarat) and other development projects in the area.

The UN secretary general will also visit the Sun temple in Modhera, before departing from Mumbai for Singapore late Thursday night, an official said.

Tough road ahead for Kharge as challenges galore for Congress

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) Tough tests await newly elected Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the party's first non-Gandhi chief in more than 24 years, as challenges galore for the grand old party on the road to the 2024 general elections.

Kharge has many things favourable going for him as he assumed the party's top spot after a high-octane election, defeating a worthy opponent in Shashi Tharoor. Kharge is known to be a unifier who takes everyone along.

However, the situation in which he takes over is a tough one for the Congress with the party's chances in the upcoming Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections not looking very bright, infighting simmering in states such as Rajasthan and Karnataka, and hurdles in abundance for Opposition unity in the run up to 2024.
